A Missouri couple is facing child abuse charges after performing a botched circumcision on a child in their home, authorities said.
Tyler Wade Gibson, 33, and his wife Bailey Alexus Gibson, 31, have been charged after a procedure carried out on November 27 led to serious injury for the child, under the age of 18.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Tyler Gibson performed the circumcision without medical training or a license to practice surgery.
The affidavit states that the procedure caused physical injury to the child, prompting the family to seek medical attention later that evening.
After the botched procedure, the child was initially taken to Lake Regional Hospital and then transferred to University Hospital for further treatment.
However, Tyler left the hospital against medical advice early on November 28. He later explained to police that he and his wife had grown tired of waiting.
In his statement to authorities, Tyler revealed he had used a utility tool for the circumcision, despite having no medical training.
He claimed to have “conducted research” beforehand and had “prayed a blessing” over the procedure.
Tyler also stated that while he sterilized the blade and used pads to catch the blood, he was unprepared for the amount of bleeding and sought medical help when the situation worsened.
Bailey Gibson, Tyler’s wife, allegedly assisted in the procedure and admitted her involvement when questioned by authorities.
Both Tyler and Bailey have been charged with child abuse. Tyler has also been charged with performing an unauthorized surgery.
Tyler appeared in court on December 3, and Bailey is scheduled for a court appearance on January 28, 2025.
This disturbing incident highlights the dangers of attempting medical procedures at home without proper training, and the Gibsons now face serious legal consequences for their actions.
The child is expected to recover, but the psychological and physical effects of the ordeal remain unclear.
