A Chicago mother, Marisol Vazquez, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing her 21-month-old daughter, Lucia, on December 20, 2024.
According to police, Vazquez told officers that “voices” in her head instructed her to murder her child.
Vazquez was found on a bed with her lifeless daughter behind her, and paramedics discovered that Lucia was not breathing.
When emergency responders attempted to revive her, water reportedly came from the child’s mouth, prompting suspicions of drowning.
Police also found water and clothing in the bathtub, raising further concerns about the circumstances of the child’s death.
Lucia was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, and investigators quickly began questioning Vazquez.
During her interrogation, Vazquez made erratic and incoherent statements, including claims about being trapped by electronics and asserting, “everyone has been raped.”
She also allegedly said, “We had to go in the water. We had to be with nature.”
Vazquez later confessed to detectives that she suffocated her daughter with a bedsheet. She claimed that the voices in her head told her to kill herself and her daughter to prevent the devil from taking the child.
In her confession, Vazquez also revealed that she had tried to drown herself but was unable to, and then attempted to cut herself.
Following her arrest, Vazquez was transported to Ascension St. Mary Hospital for a mental health evaluation, after which she was detained.
Prosecutors revealed that Vazquez had confessed to the murder to her sister, telling her not to call the authorities.
Vazquez appeared in court on January 4, 2025, and is scheduled to return to court on January 7. It is unclear whether she has legal representation.
